Breast Scan: Pan-European AI platform for advanced breast cancer screening.

MITERA Hospital is proud to announce its participation in the BreastScan Project Grant.  BreastScan refers to Pan-European Breast Image Platform for Advanced AI-based Breast Cancer, with a total grant amount of €4,572,072.55, funded by European Union EU4Health Programme 2021–2027 in the amount of €3,657,658.05 (Grant Agreement No. 101219312).

The project runs from September 1st 2025 until August 31st 2029 and brings together 20 collaborating hospitals from Austria, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Sweden, Greece,  Malta and Hungary. It is coordinated by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR).

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Europe, and early detection is key to saving lives. Today, advances in digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) are opening new possibilities to make breast cancer screening more accurate, efficient, and accessible. BreastSCan brings together leading hospitals, research centers, and technology partners across Europe to harness these opportunities. The project will collect over one million breast images from 20 partners in nine countries, making it one of the largest and most diverse datasets of its kind. This data will be integrated into the Cancer Image Europe platform for use by researchers and innovators, strengthening Europe’s competitiveness in AI-driven cancer research. BreastSCan is focused on establishing common guidelines for data quality, building a secure technical infrastructure, and training healthcare professionals to use AI tools effectively. Its long-term goal is to enable earlier cancer detection, leading to better treatment outcomes and higher survival rates for patients throughout Europe.

The BreastSCan project is creating one of Europe’s largest and most diverse breast cancer imaging datasets, with over one million images from nine countries. This massive resource, which includes mammograms, ultrasound, and MRI scans, directly contributes to the European Cancer Imaging Initiative by making the data available through Cancer Image Europe. By establishing common standards and a secure technical infrastructure, BreastSCan will enable the development and testing of advanced AI tools to make breast cancer detection faster, more accurate, and more personalized, ultimately improving patient outcomes across Europe. The project brings together 20 leading partners from across European Union to build the future of cancer screening.
