Centers of Excellence
We provide medical services to girls and counseling regarding advantages and disadvantages of available contraceptive methods.
In the Adolescent Gynecology Department of our clinic, medical services are provided to girls, from neonatal period until the end of puberty. All neonates with ambiguous genitalia- intersex disorders, mucocolpos, labial closure or vulvovaginitis are evaluated in our Division. Especially in vulvovaginitis, which is very common during infancy, childhood and adolescence, a vaginal culture with a Q tip, in order to examine the vaginal flora is mandatory. Furthermore, the exclusion of the presence of a foreign body in the vagina is imperative, due to the fact that can be the cause of recurrent vulvovaginitis.
Menarche and following menstrual cycle, which may vary from month to month, can be the reason for particularly stressful situations for both adolescent and the family. A thorough investigation is followed and informations are provided, in order to clarify normal variations from pathologic conditions, which can cause long- term adverse effects, while special care is given to evaluation and management of menstrual disorders (amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea, menorrhagia, metrorrhagia and dysmenorrhea). Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding is the most common reason why adolescents are seeking urgent medical attention in our Division, due to the large amount of blood loss, resulting to anemia, which in turn can lead to admission to the hospital.
Special protocols regarding the diagnostic approach and management of girls with congenital track anomalies, gonadal dysgenesis or pelvic tumors during adolescence are followed. Labial hypertrophy or asymmetry, infection and abscesses of the vulva/ vagina and vulvar lichen sclerosus are treated with special care in our Department, while breast asymmetry, palpable breast masses, breast pain and nipple discharge are common reasons why adolescent are visiting the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology.
In our specialized Department, counseling regarding advantages and disadvantages of available contraceptive methods, emergency contraception, as well as the monitoring that should be followed during the application of each method is provided, in order to ensure the gynecological health of adolescents.
