Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)
A process by which an oocyte is fertilised by sperm in the laboratory, outside the body: in vitro (“in glass”), in order to obtain embryos for transfer to the mother’s uterus. The fertilisation of the oocytes can be carried out by means of the conventional IVF method or by Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
The process in which sperm is initially prepared in the laboratory and then placed in the uterus by a narrow catheter. This facilitates fertilization of the egg.
The process by which oocytes from an anonymous donor are used to obtain embryos for transfer. The technique is usually applied in cases where the recipient’s oocytes are of poor quality, due to advanced maternal age, premature ovarian failure or other causes.
